Sidecut Modern Steak & Bar- Whistler BC

Hi great foodie friends. It’s been sometime since my last blog as life can hop in the way sometimes.

Where did I eat?

Sidecut Modern Steak & Bar

Atmosphere: Westcoast warmth and a balance of contemporary and traditional west coast.

We happened to go to Sidecut located in Whistler at the Four seasons in September. Knowing we were in for a big meal we kept the appies to a minimum and they ended up not really being the star attraction.

What I can say is that they are known for their steaks and coupled with a la cart sides that’s is where the star factor showed up!

I had the WAGYU GOLD LABEL FLAT IRON 8OZ. $44 and it was cooked to perfection! True to its form the Wagyu was ripple marbled which kept it moist and very flavorful.

Sidecut offers you 1 of 5 choices of seasoning, I chose the Black Angus.

I added the CORN AND JALAPEÑO GRATIN $9. This side dish was out of this world good.

We enjoyed our steaks with a nice bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and the warm fresh bread with Maple butter.

To finish we shared a few sweet treats.

I was very happy to see the…

EVERYONE LOVES LEMON TART 12
meyer lemon, torched meringue
$12 –

I was impressed with the presentation but honestly that is where the smile ended. If you are going to have a name like Everyone Loves the Lemon Tart  – I think you have set the bar of expectations high. I honestly found it to fall flat, it wasn’t what I expected and wasn’t something that you wanted to keep diving into! Normally I love anything lemon or lime and protect my lemon dessert with my life!

All in all a nice time with family, a great steak and sides but a sweet ending that wasn’t satisfying.

All of my opinions are my own and reflect my personal opinions and tastes.

Would I go back? Yes, the steaks and accompaniments were that good. The prices are a little steep but the quality of ingredients shine through.

You Gotta Try This!

My Shanti – by Vikram Vij

Happy Tuesday great foodie friends. Just an update to a wonderful newer restaurant in our South Surrey community.

There is no mistake that the outside of My Shanti will catch your attention! The outside is proudly sparkling and those “sequin” like discs move with the wind and glisten with the sun or light.

My Shanti means “my peace” and that is defined as soon as you enter the door.

The beautiful tapestry filling the main wall tells a story of peace and friendship. Now that you are literally in Chef Vikram’s and Bena’s dining room / living room settle in for a dining experience of a flavor ride thorough India with a twist of having My Shanti and Chefs twist of dishes from yesteryear growing up.

The beginning of your flavor experience starts hours before entering the dining room.

The magic starts in the kitchen where the chefs are creating fan favorites as well as new dishes with a twist and house made from the freshest ingredients possible. Some of the fun is seeing it all beginning from the spice pallet and then what shows up the table to tingle your tastebuds.

My shanti is now open for Lunch Thursday – Sunday and now that the summer weather is settling in the great patio is also now open.

We really need to be thankful for the diversity of culinary choices that are now in our community and take advantage of them being in our back yard.

We shouldn’t just “eat” and I think you know what I mean. Rather you should eat real food and take the time to experience the diverse flavors that dance across your mouth and warm your tummy.  The measure for me is if I have a great and quality meal made from real food and seasoned with true spices that create flavors rather than the known flavor enhancers that aren’t healthy, and go home not feeling bloated or God forbid guilty then I know I have just had a quality dining experience.

Bena and her team have created a perfect summer lunch menu including this flavor packed Naanwhich – yes I said Naanwhich filled with wild boar, lamb and topped with masala paneer and pickled onions, tomatoes, spinach and mint yogurt and accompanied with cassava fries!

A perfect measure of restaurantuers that care about your experience is coming around your table and truly asking of your are enjoying your dish. You will see either Bena or Vikram walking through the dining room doing just that. Taking the time to honor those who grace your doors is something that we deserve! We work hard for our dollar so shouldn’t you enjoy what you spend it on, and feel let alone be appreciated by the restaurant? That is what you can expect at My Shanti.

Let’s get out and enjoy the summer and support our great new restaurants in our community!

This is my first write up in what will be a series or short posts celebrating the restaurants on the South Surrey / White Rock Peninsula. We are so fortunate in the lowermainland with top restaurants and fantastic chefs, we also should not forget that many of them have looked and our community and come to feed us!

You gotta try this!

My opinion is my own and Soley based on my experiences. This review was not previewed by the restaurant nor influenced by anyone other than me.

2016 Golden Plates – people’s Choice awards

2016 golden plates

Happy Wednesday great foodie friends. It has been some time since my last post but life just sometimes hops in front of passions. That said my family is my passion and I would t change a thing.

This years 19th Annual  Golden Plates awards are out and what I love about them is though we are all not necessarily food critics, we do know what we like and what we don’t! We all spend to much of our honestly made $ to throw it away so we do pay attention to what we like and what we don’t.

This years awards notably have many of my favorites but there are also so many that no one person could ever try them all in one year (well I suppose it’s possible but not probable)

I hope you enjoy!

Temper Pastry & Chocolates

BC – West Vancouver – Temper Pastry

The Metro Vancouer area doesn’t know how lucky they are to have so many out of this world patisserie’s and such talented chefs behind them.

The North shore is home to Chef Steve Hodge and he is the magician behind Temper and the flavors from the great spot in West Vancouver’s Dunderave. Stop in for everything from a perfect coffee, artisan sandwiches or a VIENNOISERIE or a delectable pastry. This location has a great ambience and is a perfect spot for a healthy or sweet lunch or your morning coffee with your favorite pastry. I would say yes every time if someone asked me to go to Temper.

The Apple bite- warm, inviting and mouthwatering

Aptly named after Chef Hodge’s little pumpkin Charlie

Pastries, artisan sandwiches, chocolates, coffee

As well as a great atmosphere to sit and enjoys the fresh treats of the day.

Temper is now set for the holidays with his already popular Bûche Noël is available for order in Raspeberry Cherry, Chestnut or Caramel Apple.

There are also show pieces galore ready to wow your kids (big or small)

Rum & eggnog truffle

Lastly you will likely always have a friendly hello shot your way from the very cordial Chef Hodge who is born and raised in his native NorthShore (West Van) and approaches his business like the European counterparts like Chez Christophe who greet or say hi to their guests.

I say yes to Temper for your everyday or special occasion treats!

Richmond Station – Chef Carl Heinrich

Richmond Station – Tornonto

Happy Friday great foodie friends-

My travels took me to Toronto which finally offered me the chance to try Richmond Station and meet Chef Heinrich – Top Chef Canada season 2 champ.

Richmond station is located in the heart of bustling Toronto across the street from the iconic and one of the oldest building in Canada The Hudsons Bay.

The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming as if your sitting in between Chefs kitchen and a blend of  traditional but contemporary restaurant / eatery.

We opted for the Chefs Table as well as the Chefs tasting menu.

Chef Heinrich takes the time to great regulars and new diners alike and has almost a shy humble demeanor but extremely welcoming and friendly. You can definitely see that he has created a great team that are all bought in to his culture and demand for high quality and top notch ingredients.

The tasting menu started with Oysters on the half shell-

The fresh oysters were served with fresh grated horseradish, lemon and housemade cocktail sauce, hot sauce and some sort of Apple vinegar type sauce that was unique and very tasty.

Next up was Charcuterie a perfectly cured selection of housemade meats accompanied by preserves and pickled treats. Served with the charcuterie was housemade bread and a delectable mix of Oil and vinegar for dipping

Next up was RADISH & PINENUT SALAD

sliced lardo, bistro greens, pesto aioli, green goddess dressing. I have to admit that I don’t usually like radishes but when the magical talents of a culinary master transform ingredients to the next level I found myself wanting more!

This fresh and lively salad was served with fresh grilled bread with lardon making the bread beyond tasty.

Next served was a perfect little bite of BULGOGI STEAK TARTARE

Served on wonton chips with pear, ginger & radish.

Next we had Slow cooked Rock Fish- the fish was perfectly cooked and uniquely prepared Sous Vide served with pommes purée, mushrooms, summer sausage and red wine beef jus.

This dish was perfectly cooked and uniquely prepared. I have never thought of pairing beef jus with fish but I can tell you with all certainty that it worked gloriously!

Our final dish for the savory portion of our tasting menu was Lamb done two ways and Beef short rib burger

The lamb was masterfully cooked and prepared in two different cuts. One was delecate and tender and the second cut was the belly and sinfully good. The lamb was served with a purée and accompanied with what also seemed like the red wine beef jus.

Did I mention that we added the wine pairing ?  We did and the best part of it was that your taken on a sipping journey that is masterfully paired with your culinary journey.

To finish off the meal with had light sweet treat. Black Chocolate pudding and White Chocolate pudding.

Served with fennel, coffee cake, mint jelly, pernod meringue, cocoa nib crumble, chocolate ice cream.

A nice sweet treat to end a perfect tasting meal.

Toronto is very similar to Vancouver when referring to how many fantastic new restaurants pepper the cities with unbelievably talented chefs. Chef Carl Heinrich and his team create a very comfortable spot to eat with friends, business dinners or just a great meal with your sweetie. The style of cooking makes me think of similar to a farm to table theory where you can tell Chef prides his creations by sourcing local quality ingredients as well as supporting the local wine industry.

This eatery really is lead by a Top Chef Canada contestant – the winner in this case. No matter how high having accolade associated with your name is as well as  the perception and expectation of your customers may already be…. Richmond station shine through in my opinion.

The passion from the culinary soul shines through as you see Carl coordinate and looks over every dish leaving the kitchen!

Merriman’s – a hidden gem in Maui

Aloha great Foodie friends,

A little gem hidden in paradise was what we found last night. From the moment you enter the views and atmosphere fill your eyes.

Merriman’s: One Bay Club Place, Lahina, Hawaii

Don’t make the mistake of driving to Lahina proper as this gem is in the other direction in Kapalua.

The handcrafted drinks are a great surprise along the lines of a “Speakeasy” cocktail truly made from scratch and the difference is noticeable.

Merriman’s Mai Tai- El Dorado rum, fresh lime, orange curaçao and lilikoi foam (a passion fruit foam) try the foam before you mix it in the drink then blend all the flavors together- delectable!

$13

Parmesan truffle fries – the perfect starter to have with your handcrafted sips- a perfect blend of flavors and truffle used the right way…not overpowering.

$9

Next up was the entrees.

USDA Prime grade Fillet of Beef (GF)- a perfectly grilled medium rare with pefect char, garlic whipped potatoes, kula green beans, Savoy cabbage topped with mustard brown butter emulsion.

The perfect bites always exist when flavor depth and textures meet. Every bite of this delectable dish was filled with flavor leaving you wanting for the next bite.

$47

Lamb- I am going based on memory for all that was on this plate, but truly it was definitely a culinary wow in my books.

The lamb was “SousVide” (this is a method of cooking in an airtight plastic bag and placed in a low temprature controlled water bath) then finished to a perfect medium rare – medium (as requested) on the grill. Served with jalepeno whipped potateos, perfectly cooked kula green beans, creamed corn and what seemed to be a fresh salsa.

Every bite touched a different taste bud if that’s possible. Well done!

$42

Dinner was served with a perfect sip of Heidi Schrock Austrian rose.

To finish off our Hawaiin themed dinner was:

Maui Gold Pinneapple and toasted macadamia nut bread pudding-

A perfect blend of Hawaiin flavors coupled with a traditional comfort food dessert topped with rum sauce and Haupia (coconut) icecream. Delectable!

Provenance

Proven Ance restaurant in Newport Beach, California

A work trip took me to Orange County and as always a new culinary treat is usually on the docket for one night with my foodie workmates.

2015/01/img_9259.jpg

The atmosphere is a combination of rustic and contemporary and welcoming almost as if you are walking into the chefs dining room.
The service was pretty good and certainly friendly.
We happened to be there during “Dine Newport” so there was a “Prix Fix” $40 menu option which we did as a group.
Many of the menu items were also found on the daily menu so a mix of specials and favorites were sure to be found for regulars.
The table started with a Charcuterie board which was flavorful and pleased all.

2015/01/img_9255.jpg

I started with the Cauliflower soup served bisque style-

2015/01/img_9258.jpg
The flavors were decent with a hint of curry but fell short due to being under seasoned. The soup lacked salt and also benefitted with fresh ground pepper.

Next up the Braised short ribs with Demi glaze served over cheesy grits and accompanied with grilled Brussel sprouts. This dish was spot on. The ribs were tender and fall off the bone perfect with deep flavors that matched perfectly over the cheesy grits.

2015/01/img_9261.jpg

Finally the special menu had a Carrot cake listed which was exactly what I was in the mood for. I was underwhelmed by the cake as it was slightly dry and no wow factor was present just begging for another bite.

2015/01/img_9263.jpg

I have heard many good things about Provenance but also that consistency is lacking. Orange County has restaurants that I just can’t wait to go back to, I can’t say that this one won my tastebuds and culinary heart just yet.

Last week I was pleasantly surprised to have a friend recommend a new eatery in Richmond that he said he found on my Facebook page?! I must have been looking around and liked a photo or something but this secret little gem must have fallen off my FoodDar but i honestly can report that WOW am I glad we tried it!
This perfect little eatery is tucked in on the quieter side of Westminster Hwy.
When you enter the restaurant the atmosphere is warm, welcoming and comfortable. The friendly faces are waiting to welcome you and recommended the days special or simply direct you to some of their fantastic tried and true favorites.

The Sandwich Board :

IMG_9299.JPG

My friend was as interested as I was to try a few different flavors- we opted for the Samson:
A coffee covered and strawberry glazed slow cooked beef brisket- butter lettuce, red bell peppers and house aioli.
The brisket was melt in your mouth goodness and not chewy in any way.

And the Molly:
Hot smoked salmon – butter lettuce, pickled capers, fresh dill and house aioli.
The chef proudly but humbly proclaimed that One of our staff members caught this salmon yesterday from the Fraser river
Let me tell you, you could tell! Fresh, fresh, fresh!
We all know that the first key to a great sandwich is the bread ! The restaurant doesn’t even boast about the perfect bookends for the perfect ingredients but I assure you they have nailed it!

Another pleasant addition to your plate / pan has to be the house made chips in olive oil with a light sea salt.
It was also refreshing not to find any soda pop on the menu, the restaurant serves 2 house made fresh ingredient drinks – Honey, ginger and lemon (which I had and it was perfect) and Strawberry Mint both served hot or cold.
You could also get coffee and of course water.
The sandwiches were excellent. The ingredients were full of deep flavor, fresh ingredients and a perfect finish with the fresh bread.

All in all this is a big recommend in Richmond that I know once your visited you will be back for more.
The prices were reasonable and portions just right.
The owners and staff are friendly, humble and happy to receive you.

Famoso Pizzeria hits South Surrey

Happy Sunday great foodie friends,

20140406-090737.jpg

A wonderful pizzeria has come to South Surrey! Famoso
Who is Famoso?
Famoso Story
In the summer of 2005 co-owner Justin Lussier traveled through Italy and Naples and fell in love with the mouth-watering fire-roasted pizzas served throughout the country.

After eating at Pizzeria Sorbillo in Naples, Justin found a payphone and immediately called his friends and future partners, Jason Allard and Christian Bullock. They soon decided that they needed to bring authentic Neapolitan pizza to Canada.

Training with the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN), organization preserving the standards of authentic Neapolitan pizza, the Famoso boys learned about the unique ingredients and cooking process required.

The rest is history…
Famoso wisely imports it’s flour and tomato sauce from Italy and takes the fine ingredients along with there unique training and brings you a taste of Italy to your back yard!

The restaurants are upscale casual and have a unique style of service. You browse the menu and then write down your choices and go up to hand your order in and pay. Take your seat again and the rest of the service will be brought to you.
The pizzeria has an impressive pizza oven that bakes your authentic Neapolitan pizza in a mere 90 seconds due to its intense heat.
Famoso’s menu is full of great flavours and choices but is also simple as Italian food should be. They know who they are and what they want to bring to their customers so keep it simple.
